Apple Search Ads Campaign Structure for Scaling Mobile Apps

Most people waste their budget on Apple Search Ads because their account structure is messy, making it easy to get lost in all the settings and keywords. This is bound to lead to failure.

In my experience as a technical mobile growth expert managing over $20 million in ad spend, I have learnt that success is not always about having the best ad creative. Often it is simply about having the right structure to support scaling.

This guide covers the exact framework I use to help clients get more profitable installs while lowering their costs.

Why Campaign Structure Matters

If you put all your keywords into one Apple Search Ads campaign, you lose control over where you spend your money. You risk overspending on general terms that do not convert, while missing out on cheap, high-intent searches.

Or you are just spending so much time between campaigns to optimise keywords that you get frustrated about why everything is so manual with Apple Search Ads.

A good structure lets you see exactly what works and what does not, in a quick and easy way. The goal is simple: spend more on the winners and stop spending on the losers.

The 3 Essential Apple Search Ads Campaign Types

While many guides suggest creating four or five different campaigns, in my 10+ years of experience, I have found that keeping it simple is often better. This approach is much easier to manage, especially for lean teams or startups.

1. Brand Campaign (Defence)

This campaign protects your brand. By bidding on your specific brand name using Exact Match, you stop competitors from showing up when people search for you.

This also provides very cheap installs because the user intent is so high.

As a bonus, since you are the most relevant to the brand name, you will get cheap cost per tap. Meanwhile, competitors bidding on your keyword will see costs rising to the point it becomes unprofitable for them to bid on your brand name.

2. Non-Brand Campaign (Offence)

This is where we capture people searching for your features or your competitors.

While most agencies split “Generic” (like “fitness app”) and “Competitor” (like “MyFitnessPal”) into separate campaigns, I recommend putting them into one single Non-Brand campaign.

Why? It is simpler, gathers data faster, and helps us learn what works without checking ten different places. It makes managing campaigns much easier, leaving you time to optimise other ad channels.

3. Discovery Campaign (Mining)

This is your research lab where we find new keywords you might not have thought of. We can use Broad Match and Search Match here to cast a wide net.

In my experience, using Broad Match is enough, since Search Match tends to just show your app in front of irrelevant searches. While for Broad Match, at least you are selecting a seed keyword that’s fully related to your app, so your app shows up for relevant keywords.

How to Structure the Discovery Campaign

I consider the Apple Search Ads discovery campaign to be a key tool for growth because it finds the exact words users type when looking for an app like yours.

The Crucial Step: Negative Keywords

To make this work effectively, you must add your Brand and Non-Brand keywords as Negative Keywords in this campaign.

This forces Apple to find new users instead of bidding against yourself for the same keywords, saving money and keeping your data clean.

As you find more keywords that are relevant, or not relevant, you add them to your other exact match campaigns, and then add them as negative in your discovery campaign. This is an-ongoing process called keyword mining, which is similar to how Google Search Ads best practices used to be back in the day.

Using Paid Ads to Boost App Store Optimisation

Do not let your ad data sit in the dashboard when you can use it to get free downloads.
Look at your campaigns to find the keywords that turn into installs and revenue, then take those words and put them in your App Store Title or Subtitle.

Consequently, you will rank higher for those words organically, meaning you pay for the data once but get free downloads for a long time.
